Dr. I Dewa Gede Arsa Putrawan, a Chemical Engineering lecturer at ITB and a member of the Sustainable Chemical Products Research Group, Faculty of Industrial Technology (FTI-ITB), received the Gold Winner Award at the 2025 Research and Development Awards in the Downstreaming category – Granted Patent subcategory, during the 2025 Diktisaintek Awards organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology on Friday, 19 December 2025.
Together with Prof. Yazid Bindar, Dr. Arsa was granted a patent for an energy-efficient process to produce ammonium chloride from wastewater generated by the thermal stabilizer industry for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This innovation reflects the core principles of Sustainable Chemical Products, emphasizing resource efficiency, waste minimization, and value creation through environmentally responsible chemical processes. By converting industrial waste into economically valuable products, this approach offers clear advantages over conventional production pathways.
This achievement further strengthens Dr. Arsa’s long-standing track record with his research team (Dr. Antonius Indarto, Dr. Dendy Adityawarman, and Dr. Dicka Ar Rahim) in developing palm oil–based reverse ester tin PVC thermal stabilizers (RE Tin Stab Sawit). At the laboratory scale, the research was supported by the Palm Oil Research Grant (GRS 2016 and GRS 2021), and has now been realized at the pilot scale by PT Timah Industri.
This innovation also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contributing to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) through energy-efficient processes, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by advancing industrial downstream innovation, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through waste-to-value practices, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by supporting sustainable and circular chemical industry development.
